Capcom Classics Collection 2 Info
I'm lead producer on the Backbone/Digital Eclipse side of Capcom Classics Collection 2, and I just wanted to mention a few features. First of all, the game is for PS2 (US and Europe) and Xbox (worldwide submission, not sure where actual distribution will be) and it comes out mid-november. Here's the game list:
- 1941
- Avengers
- Black Tiger
- Block Block
- Captain Commando
- Eco Fighters
- Knights of the Round
- King of Dragons
- Last Duel
- Mega Twins
- Magic Sword
- Quiz and Dragons
- Side Arms
- The Speed Rumbler
- Street Fighter I
- Super Street Fighter II Turbo
- Strider
- Three Wonders
- Tiger Road
- Varth
We've added a new save game feature so you can save your progress in any game at any time. I am a big fan of letting people save anytime they want, so I'm really glad we got this in. Each of the 20 games has 3 save slots.
Every game has a bonus area containing a text history about the game, some gameplay tips, concept art, and music from the game. Note that I wrote all the tips for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (ST).
In addition to the original version of Quiz and Dragons, there is also a revised version (basically a 21st game) that has all-new trivia questions about Capcom history and games. The majority of the questions were written by myself and Capcom staff. By playing this extra-spicy version of Quiz and Dragons, you can earn cheats for the 20 other games on the collection (each game has one cheat).
The game also features almost 30 minutes of tutorial videos on Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Special thanks to ST player NKI for his help performing moves and combos and in editing. The videos start by explaining and demonstrating the concept of controlling space, the central concept of Street Fighter. They go on to explain everything from how to perform a fireball to 2in1s, meaty attacks, reversals, and even advanced concepts like "button up" reversals, "piano" inputs, and safe jumps.
Every game on the collection is emulated from its original arcade version, so the same nuances and glitches from the originals will still be there. Note that even the Q-sound on ST is emulated. Even though ST is emulated, we've managed to sneak in two additional modes: Versus and Training. Versus mode allows you to switch characters after each game, even if you win (note that you can't do that in the original ST game, and that game has no 'event' mode either.). Versus mode also keeps track of wins and losses. Training mode is very simple and feature light, but it does let you fight against a dummy with infinite life so you can practice combos.
It's still a couple months away, so this info will have to tide you over for a while. You can pre-order in the meantime.

This looks a bit like it’s home console ST with 19 other games.
Wich will, of course, sell millions.

Oh it’s getting an Xbox release too? Awesome. This is the first time I heard mention of that. I’m glad because my PS2 is a hunk of junk that barely works. This looks like a fantastic collection, much better lineup than the first collection had (There’s at least ten games here that I can definately see my self spending a substantial amount of time on). Great work with this Sirlin, I’m certainly looking forward to it’s release. Do you have a definate date for us?

Holy Crap, Captain Commando, only the most esoteric, violent and blatently Japanese side-scrolling beat-em-up in the history of mankind. I clap in happiness at the hot-shit nature of this announcement.
I’m not familiar with most of the other games on that list, but honestly… 30 minutes of tuteorial vids by NKI? Shit, that’s enough to sell this thing all by itself.
Good work, Sirlin. May all your children be of the masculine inclination.

Well, the videos were written, voice acted, and produced by me, but NKI was absolutely vital in the departments of enacting and capturing gameplay footage and editing. My AP Thomas Grove’ also pitched in.

It’s got Strider on it.
*STRIDER*!!!
If this gets an Xbox release in Europe, I will be super-happy! (and if “only” a PS2 release - I’ll still buy :P )

Sweet! Knights of the Round!
And instructional videos made by Sirlin! WOOO!!! This I -have- to get.

Varth! Right on! I’ve always wanted to play that game.

Chiki Chiki Bros!

No gamecube release? :(

Oh snap, perfect console ST? AND vids to go along with it? This is great stuff. Were there any additional trouble getting the thumbs up for the vids?

Holy shit! King of Dragons and Knights of the Round! I played a lot of both of those games on the SNES. I’m really interested in playing the original (read: non-gimped) arcade versions. I take it these ports will support the original arcade versions’ player caps(?) Too bad I’m lacking a PS2 multi-tap.
I have a friend who always played a lot of Quiz and Dragons. He might be interested in this as well.
I’ve never bought an arcade port compilation before, so forgive my ignorance, but will someone elaborate on how credits are typically implemented in these sorts of things? Are you just always given unlimited credits for the games? Is there some configurable cap you can set?

Ooh! Finally, a Super Turbo that’s not on the Dreamcast! This, I will have to pick up. If only to escape the horror of AE.

Sounds great, but will the PS2 version have online? It doesn’t sound like it but it would be cool. I would love to get better at Street Fighter by playing guys online.

Is there any chance of a 360 version (in the apparent absence of a U.K. Xbox version), or is that just my/Gamefaq’s wishful thinking?

I just came!
This is the kind of thing that blaaaayyyyytantly wouldn’t have made it into the game if you weren’t producer, Capcom need more guys like you.

I already have SSF2T because of the Anniversary collection, but I’d love to play Strider again and a bunch of the other games. And the inclusion of some of the features you talk about make the release more enticing.
I look forward to the collection’s release.

Anniversay Edition is broken, and many people are complaining about it. See JChensor’s latest blog entry:

Arcade perfect ST with VS mode is what the world has been craving for a very long time. Dave Sirlin, you and the team deserve a medal. Someone should make release day a public holiday. Or at the very least make ST a compulsory class in high school from now on.
My one and only desire (which itself is not very important in the grand scheme of things) is that the game offers low-res progressive scan display modes without filtering. Interlaced and filtered output makes for bleeding eyes. Hi-res progressive scan options might also be smart as the world moves to LCD TVs, and fighting game lag from upscaling sucks (see the Evo East near-disaster that caused such a fuss).
But even if it is interlaced and ugly I’ll still buy it. I’m not that overly dogmatic. :)
I agree with reply 16. Jim Miles) - Capcom really does need more people like Sirlin on their staff. I will finally have a real reason to switch my MAME cabinet off.

Mitch: Anniversary Edition is different and buggy.
My team wrote the Xbox 360 compatibility department about 3 times to see what we have to do to make an xbox1 game work in 360 and they never wrote us back.
The game does support 480p. It doesn’t seem to be filtered, but I don’t know exactly which method is used. Exactly no one involved except me even looks out for input lag, and I don’t have a way to even measure it. Hopefully this won’t be a problem though, as it seems ok so far.

480p will make the LCD/Plasma crowd happy and help kill the lag associated with cheaper brand TVs and their internal scalers.
240p would make little old me and the 4 other people in the world still using RGB CRT 15KHz monitors happy too. Scanlines are so purdy…. :)

i’d love 240p as well. that would definitely make it arcade perfect. :D

Dude,
I am a fan from way back. Since I live in Asia, that means our PS2’s are Region 2/3 and play only NTSC J discs. How come Capcom Japan won’t release the second compilation here? Especially since it will have that gameplay/tutorial video. This sucks. Now either I have to buy a second PS2 (NTSC U/C of course) or pirate a copy just to play arcade perfect ST. No way in hell will I buy an obsolete Xbox just to play this game.
