Guilty Gear Slash match of mine

Ah, Guilty Gear. I few weeks ago I went to a gathering/tournament in Sacramento with about 25 people and three ggxx setups. This last weekend I went to another one in Redwood City with 35-40 people and *seven* tvs with ggxx. Above is a video of one of my tournament matches. I'm Faust (the guy with a giant scalpel and a bag on his head.)

Although I made a couple mistakes I cringe at (such as the accidental item super that lost me one round), you can see that I try to do the silly pogo-stick move as much as possible. After the first round, I could tell the opponent didn't know what to do against it. The last round is also pretty funny, since I managed to get two "mini-potemkin" items on the screen at once. Each of these (small red and brown guys) has only a 1 in 256 chance of appearing when I create an item, and I got two at once. The mini-potemkins take three hits for the enemy to kill, each. Notice that at the end, I hide inside them, lol. Also at the end, when my meteors are coming down at the enemy, I activate an item super. Activating a super at the moment another move (in this case the meteors) hits the enemy can make that thing (the meteors) unblockable. I'm not sure if I triggered that bug here, or if the enemy just randomly got hit or didn't know the meteors were coming, but either way, it's a pretty crazy match.

Nice dude! Glad you won too. Thought it was pretty funny that he ate jump in into ‘Going My Way’ (dunno the regular or community name) twice. Those two beginnings seemed identical.
It’s also refreshing to see good matches that aren’t boring or with boring play styles. Faust seems risky with all that item tossing, but makes him fun to play and watch. Maybe I just like high risk characters. Or maybe i don’t know about slash to know how risky it is ;p

  2. Kicks Says:

    ps
    how’d you do overall?

  3. Time Mage Says:

Nice Faust there. I see you use the item super a lot; while I know it is great, I don’t use it as often, since I like to save meter in case I can land a throw: Throw, RC, K -> standard air combo. In Slash it isn’t as damaging as in Reload, but it still does good damage. Also, the item super can screw you sometimes if you mistime it.

Anyway, you seem better than me, so what do I know.

  4. Rubix42 Says:

Excellent match! I wish more higher level players would share their matches for us to view. Seems like no-one wants to share the secrets. Plus I live in Detroit, with a wife and baby, so the chances of me making it out to an event are about zero.

  5. KTallguy Says:

Hey man, great match. Faust’s options from that pogo stick stance are much better now! I only played Slash once at a location test in Japan, but I’m definitely interested in playing it more. Now that the new GG is basically confirmed for Wii, you planning on picking it up?

  6. Jim Miles Says:

    I enjoyed that!

  7. Kayin Says:

Heh, that was some ‘nice’ bursting, Sirlin! :P That aside though, great match. I really like your Faust. I’ve been trying to get a friend to pick him up since he seems very light on execution but heavy on the mind game. Certainly seems like an ideal fit for you — much more then say…. Chipp.

@ Rubix42: Dude, match videos are everywhere and their is very little in the way of ’secret techniques’ or anything. Check out http://www.dustloop.com/forums/showthread.php?t=237&page=45 or just use Youtube.

Ha. I watched the video before reading the description, and I had figured out you were bag-guy for exactly that reason. And I don’t even play fighting games. :D

  9. Bleach Says:

The biggest surprise I had playing against a friend who was good with Faust, was when he FRC’ed at the end of the enema super and did that stab move->knee->karate chop in mid-air. You should try that (if it is still useable in Slash or Accent Core).

  10. Jacen Says:

Ah, GG, how I love you so. When are you making a GG Tutorial vid Sirlin??

  11. Graham Says:

I see Faust has even more annoying options from the pogo-stance than ever. Axl doesn’t seem to have changed much, although I’m suprised not to see at least a short Bomber loop, unless that just doesn’t work anymore.

I’m unfortunately stuck playing the basic GGXX, when I can get anyone else to play against me at all. (And I can’t even FRC anything, which gives you some idea of the standard of my (lack of) regular competition.)

That “super flash unblockable” is just a product of how supers are handled in the engine. Upon activation, both characters are “frozen” for a few frames. Projectiles are somewhat autonomous, apparently, and they carry on moving as normal during that time. They can still be blocked, but only so long as your opponent was already blocking before you excuted your super. If he wasn’t, well, you’ve seen the result.

Dizzy is the character I’ve most commonly seen exploiting this, usually by using her Imperial Ray to render Undine’s lighting blade unblockable. Depending on the range you do this at, the rather long hit-stun on the (often unblockable) projectile means they wind up taking the super as well.

  12. SuiLuung Says:

Ack! You put up MY match against you without telling me?! lol, it’s cool. Good matches Sirlin and obviously I haven’t played any real Faust players before.

  13. SuiLuung Says:

P.S. Why I got hit by the final meteors: I was still in lag from rensengeki.

  14. rashreflection Says:

Nice match, Sirlin, and Faust is definitely a more suitable character for you!

Sui, 6K always seemed to hit Faust out of pogo, why didn’t you use it more? Jump back S could work as well.

Glad to see you’ve been traveling for this game, as it is the best out there IMO. And as an aside, haven’t you suggested in the past that games should be balanced by trying to make everyone overpowered?

Well, that is exactly the route Arc has taken with Accent Core, and it looks like it could blow away all previous versions. What I think would especially appeal to you is that, generally speaking, they dumbed down the combos but made the characters themselves deeper - there are simply a lot more interesting things to do with almost all of them.

Thus far, Eddie looks to be the clear #1 again, but it won’t be nearly as bad as #r because there are many more strong characters that can give him a close fight. Hell, Testament is probably 2nd best, Axl/May/Venom are actually very good now, and even Zappa is finally decent.

They did add a parry in this one, but the timing is far stricter than in 3rd Strike and it has a recovery period if you miss. I have almost never seen it in real matches thus far.

Additionally, if AC does receive a US release on the Wii, I think the scene could grow. Cheapest console, obviously, but another not-so-obvious possibility is that we could see Smash players jump on board. They haven’t gotten into other fighters mostly, because many of them tend to only own the Nintendo console from the last couple generations or so.

Sorry for the off-topicness here, just figured some of this might be of interest.

  15. Sirlin Says:

I was not aware that AC “dumbed down the combos” but if that’s true, then good.

Unfortunately, I think the Wii release is probably just a rumor that all started from one incorrect post on GameFly’s site, but I would very much love to be proved wrong on that.

    –Sirlin

  16. Kayin Says:

The Wii thing was just a gamefly mixup. Anyways, the combos aren’t really dumbed down (They are for some characters but thats true for every revision).

Honestly in my opinon it looks like it’s going to be waaay less balanced then Slash or maybe even #Reload. More of an XXish feel.. or maybe just #R level. Whatever. Tons of BS in the game everywhere. But who knows, might be real fun.

  17. Zerite Says:

What happens in the super glitch is that during the super “freeze” the projectiles keep moving. So if you were blocking when the super started you stay blocking, but otherwise your character freezes and probably gets hit by the projectiles.

Faust has alot of strangeness, but he’s still a very solid character. You can’t argue with that kind of reach and speed. Also, you can use FD to do a basically tiger-knee type aerial 2k, and there is some kind of weird FD trick you can do when your in the air to cause him to basically pause in the air. I think those both might actually be the same “glitch”. It was in reload also but the only character that got to keep the glitch was Faust since it made him alot more interesting.
    Here’s a video showing some of this : http://www.norematch.com/ggxx/videos/acho_ggxx_20061207c.wmv
There are alot of GG videos uploaded to that site so you’ll probably find alot worth watching.

  18. Zerite Says:

I wanted to edit my comment, but oh well.

Is Evo2k South a 3v3 tournament? The additional tournament rules seem to imply this, but there is nothing about it on the sign-up page.

  19. spudlyff8fan Says:

Man…it’s times like this I wish I pursued playing as Faust.

What’s the best way for Slayer to take down a pogoing Faust?

  20. Zerite Says:

214p -> k probably. or you could use his 236 236 HS super.

  21. Zerite Says:

the 6p might also connect. I don’t know. and you can always try 6HS.

fyi the numbering system I’m using views directions as though they wer mapped to a number pad, with 5 being neutral 6 being forward etc.

  22. spudlyff8fan Says:

    I know that :P

    And thanks.

  23. Kdansky Says:

Are the teleporting + appearing out of a door moves that bad? Sadly I have zero (really zero) competitive opponents here, so this is hard for me to tell.

  24. spudlyff8fan Says:

Sirlin, did you use that glitch where Faust FDs out of his j2K?

I’m not entirely sure, by looking at it…

  25. Eaode Says:

Actually, rashreflection is absolutely correct. Now that it is Confirmed for Wii, you will see smash players jump on board. I’ve never played GG, but I’m a smash player and will be buying Accent core for Wii, and there are plenty of people on smashboards who are going to do the same.

That’s the great thing. Smash is easy enough to get into and then you steadily get into the competitive scene and used to complicated things, and now I’m addicted to 2d fighters. SSB is a good starting point for fighting games, and now it might just pay off with the Wii release of AC

  26. Rainy Dany Says:

    Mr Sirlin

I finish reading ur book and I gotta tell you: it’s awesome!!!!…I hope I can buy it this month!.

I’m from Mexico, specifically Mexico city, here Street Fighter isn’t so popular, but I really love the game; I grew up playing it and I really, really enjoy playing it; Super Turbo, Third Strike, theyre awesome!. So, Dave, I have some questions!!!! (YEAH!!!)

1-Did you know the King of Fighters series? (here in Mexico are very famous, an almost every arcade is a KOF…I prefer Street Fighter…but what the hell…)

2-What do you think about the game?

3-Why KOF isn’t in the EVO?

Well, is all for the moment, thanks and I really, really aprecciate an answer!

By the way, that Comic-Con matches were GREAT!!!!!!!
