Nintendo’s Line at E3 2006
I said before that Nintendo's booth this year was the most popular booth ever at any E3. I don't think people realized that I meant that literally. This video should drive the point home.

I thought disney world was bad when I was a kid. lol

Damn. If there was any doubt about the Wii’s success at Christmas, I think it’s gone now. I just hope they’re able to produce supply enough to fit that kinda crowd.

Well, a friend of mine went to E3 on Friday, well after the exhibit had opened. He said he didn’t even go near the Nintendo booth because he couldn’t find the end of the line, it wrapped all the way around the L.A. Convention Center. Bad organization or not, that says something.
May 19th, 2006 at 7:25 am
Well, with a crowd THAT large I don’t think it would have made much difference how well the booth was layouted. At best they could have fit another hour worth of people in but that’s it then. Simply stupendous :D

Bad organization??? Hahaha. Nice try. They had a very large area where you could try out the 27 Wii games. They had a line to get into the area. That’s it. That’s all it was, and all it should have been. It turns out that a crazy number of people wanted to play the Wii. There’s no tricky “booth organization scheme” that would have helped.
The Sony booth was much easier to walk around in…which says something about the excitement level of Sony vs. Nintendo.
I also laughed at Scott Miller’s line that developers who used the Wii controller “had a lot of negative comments.” I heard zero negative comments. Maybe he was that one guy with a PSP I saw at E3?

Scott Miller’s comment sounds like sour grapes that he couldn’t get in. There’s a reason why it was easier to check out Sony & Microsoft. It might be related to the reason why I’m buying the Wii as a Christmas present for my retired PARENTS, who will have to fight their adult children to get in on some tennis action. My hat is off to Nintendo.

Wow, maybe Nintendo should have run their own E3 this year to prevent this. I have never been at E3, but… is it possible to add another building? With that huge amount of fansites that get media passes this can only become worse, so a more restrictive access or bigger booths seem like the solution.
That said, even with Wii being the first console I’m really excited about since the SNES, there is no way I would have waited four hours to play it for five minutes. I guess the wait was worth for some people though :P
And what Nintendo should do is release DS Lite in Europe and announce a worldwide release for Wii, because we europeans get everything later and a lot more expensive. We have become used to the $=€ conversion and to get everything 6 months later, but it still sucks :( [/rant]

Being strongly anti-fanboy is almost as bad as being fanboy! Thats exactly how that guy comes off to me. His entire article is negative, and he even states with great bias a few facts. Interesting how he forgot to mention, while complainign about flicking his wrist, the standard dual analog controller that the Wii has, that can be used for many games. Given we dont know much about the specs, and sure higher specs can make for amazing gameplay experiences ala MGS4 and Halo 3 probably, but 90% of the time the technical specifications are eye candy, just like the yearly upgrade of madden, which is the same game in a new box that manages to top sales charts every year… They are insignificant. In terms of gameplay, you really cant achieve much more than you already could on the PS2!! It just looks prettier now. The 1- 5 % that will do beautfiul things with the new hardware, hats off to them. They wanted to make a great game, not a game that will sell (unfortunately these 2 are not always synonomous ).
Personally, I dont give a shit which system wins the console war. Do you really think that XBOX has a better quality library than the Gamecube ( not counting multiplatform titles, which usually arent that great to begin with)?! Why did it sell? Because it appealed to the hardcore gamer?? No… Because it had really nice Madden and NBA live, and your average generic shooting game, that average I play an hour or 2 a day Mike has fun with online or offline with his buds. THats it! There is nothing outside of Halo and a few Bioware games ( which had PC ports) that you needed an Xbox to enjoy, but hey it sold well, even better than the GC which had numerous exclusive titles. Go figure.. Sales and systems specs arent everyhting either. That article raised some decent points, but employed such a biased connotation that it disgusted me. Perhaps though its target audience was the stupid generic fanboy?

Me, personally, I’m going by whats most, y’know, fun.
*shrug*
Everything else is just noise to me, personally.
Got a Gamecube when it was about $100, got a PS2 at the same price, and just last week got an xbox for $90. None of ‘em are now, but they’re cheaper now, the games are cheaper and just as fun, and from community consesus I can pretty much figure out which games are crap before I put down cash for them.
Wii I’ll probably buy at launch, if it’s aroun $200 though, just for the uniqueness of it.
And when the xbox 360 comes down in price to about $100, I’ll buy one. Same with the PS 3.
The next-gen games will be just as fun in a few years - meantime, I’ve got a ton of games cheap from the current generation, and far more of them than if I’d buyed when they first came out. I figure I made the right choice.

Holy Cow, what a line. I’m impressed you actually played the Wii,Sirlin, you have patience I can only dream about. Dang, so many games look so good, but for the moment, I have to go with Twilight Princess.

Well, so far, from every fan-gaming site I read, there were only positive comments about the Wii’s handling. Gaming Steve, who has maybe some of the very best inside contacts in the industry, spoke about the same lines about all the people he knows.
Besides, what true casual gamer CARES about E3 lines? None.
Wow, there was a huge line at a convention, how amazing. People must be stupid to join such a long line. See, that’s why I rather wait for the things to come and take a look then, no convention tickets, no lines.
THAT’s a true casual gamer. Me? Well, I would probably weep being at E3 and not being able to play the Wii but 5 hours wait? Sorry, I’m not insane. I root for Nintendo without being a fanboy, I got a PlayStation instead of a N64 after having a SNES. Then I went dual PS2/Cube. Should say everything.
But what I love about Nintendo is their daring attitude and the Wii is just along this line. If it comes out for €200 you can already count me in and looking at the possible lineup I can already say I will be satisfied.
Nintendo will be the big winner in this game, the happy 3rd who will dwell in it’s own corner of the market away from the direct competition of PS3 and X360. And me, I’ll be happy to sit back and watch as Nintendo will try to get games onto the Wii aside from the mainstream. 15 years of gaming make one hungry for something truly new once in a while.

To Goran:
Well, Sirlin didn’t say anything negative in his E3 review at least. You know, something like “overhyped” or “let#down”. So I guess it was good. Though he only mentioned he SAW people playing tennis so there is a chance he didn’t really get to play the Wii.
About pointlesswasteoftime fanboysism, well, it was pointless. And a waste of time. Cynical without bringing home a point besides “don’t be a blind fanboy who buys hype”. But for that, he typed a whole lot ;)
My fanboy listing:
Mac vs Windows: Mac, because it’s been good. Now, things slide. Still the love of pro-designers and many doctors
Rock vs Rap: neither… but there are good exponents from that
Explorer vs FireFox: FireFox, because of tabs and being in control with the right plugins
ATI vs NVidia: currently ATI, better picture, try high quality AF
Republicans vs. Democrats: I don’t like war so democrats
Dog people vs. Cat People: Cat… I simply like them. But dogs are also nice. Oh, and but only in rural regions, a dog/cat in the city is a crime against them
Ford vs Chevy: Asian/Germany fabrication :P
Pinot vs. Merlot: Grauburguner or Traminer
Emo fans vs. Everybody Else: I believe in vile topics… this is one. Both sides need to consult me :p
This nonesensical listing has been brought to you by pointlesswasteoftime.com . It’s simply NOT a serious new-source. Not even one for a good opinion to speak open.
Hope you get your answer from Sirlin, Goran.

I do not agree with everything he said, but I take note of thing I do not agree and liek to post them on different sources, so as to get as many opinions as I can get. What had caught my eye was especially what he said about what Nintendo is expecting of it’s console compared to what a lot of people are expecting of the Wii.
And offcourse what he had to say about the controller. Cause frankly console manufacturos have a lot more freedom in creating innuvative things then pc manufacturors, and seeing justt he graphics improved for a third time by sony and a second time by x-box seemed a little boring, although more power can mean more freedom for devs, i mean a game like supreme commander could never be done on an ps2, but offcourse the the xtra cost can also make them take less risks.
But I am getting offtopic. I really wanted to know weather or not the Wii controller is just an fresh new way of controlling but not that much better or worse then the standard, or an overall improvement on the current controllers, and in what kind of games. Does it make some games really a lot easier and others nearly impossible. And how is that resolved, cause you have all those planned attachements. How much do they cost, cause that could drive the cost easly. And I myself am a pretty hardcore gamer, and since Nintendo is targetting the casual gamer it may not be something for me.
But as a harcore gamer I play a lot of indie games, because i need something new and refreshing constantly and graphics are the first thing that gets old. I’ve had it with the current limitations of controllers, 6 years is a long enough time to learn from the previous mistakes and makes some real new improvements.

That better have been worth the damn wait. I hbeard that most of the people in the line were just playng Metroid: Hunters games while waiting…
6 hours? I wouldn’t wait that long
