Looks like the cat's out of the bag that you can play the game in widescreen or not, with new gameplay or not, with new music or not, and with redrawn sprites or not. Plus 8-person tournaments, true 1080p, and a way to view the hitboxes. It's all for you!

Dang, homey!
March 14th, 2008 at 3:25 am
A lot of these options are wonderful. I’m wondering about the 8-man tournaments though - how will they work?
March 14th, 2008 at 3:50 am
If I was holding back before, I’m definitely getting it now.
March 14th, 2008 at 4:15 am
any chance of this coming out for the wii? I’d love to get this game but I’m not prepared to shell out the few hundred bucks a 360 or ps3 costs.
March 14th, 2008 at 4:35 am
Well, it would be dumb to call it HD remix for the Wii. Through SF 480P remix does have the complexity you expect from a Steet Fighter name.
But yes, I’ll parrot Kick’s response:
Dang, homey!

>Looks like the cat’s out of the bag that you can play the game in widescreen or not
So are there any differences in spacing, or is ist just a visaual difference?
March 14th, 2008 at 6:00 am
^^^^^ You could call it Super Street Fighter II Turbo ED Remix. I’d prefer SFHD to be released on Steam though.
The thing I hate about this beta is that people are going to be playing only Ryu and Ken for eight weeks, then lots of them will stick with those characters, which is the exact opposite of fun because it’s boring enough right now joining any form of SF online (GGPO, Kaillera P2P or HF over Live) and finding most opponents only use shotos. Now they’ll have another shoto to choose from, a buffed Ken and eight weeks of practice, so I’m predicting 50% shotos online.
March 14th, 2008 at 6:26 am
So now that we know that the game will be played in true 1080p, this begs one question:
“How will this be handled?” Or “How will this affect gameplay?”

March 14th, 2008 at 6:43 am
The gameplay/spacing will be identical to before, but the camera will be zoomed in to fill the whole screen.
March 14th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Sirlin, please answer me if you can. Is there a release date already announced for the Commando 3 game? What about HD Remix?
More important, if I buy Commando 3 from Brazil will I be able to test HD Remix as well, or is this just for US players?
March 14th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Sirlin, you are a hero among people who aren’t deserving of heroes.

Are Ken and Ryu finished? From what I can tell most of the animations look fine, but I checked the videos on gametrailers and the standing animation looks way off. I did some comparison gifs:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/ultracrazy1/ryu-standing-STHDR.gif
March 14th, 2008 at 11:20 am
To UC1, I hope the sprites arn’t finished, as the sprites for both Ryu and Ken don’t look nearly as good as they originally were. And I was reading up that the sprites were downsampled to the XBLA size requirement and keep everything intact. Supposedly Capcom was given more space, maybe they’ll fix up the sprites before release, and were the PS3 sprites downsampled? I mean, the PSN has no space limit

A way to view hitboxes?
I just did something naughty in my trousers…
March 14th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Just a little question (pleasr dont hit me! ;-)):
Why wouldn’t there ever be a release of fighting games for PC?
March 14th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Looking at the videos posted on Gametrailers.com there seems to be some framerate issues. Is this going to be fixed in HD Remix at least? You could make the argument to keep it in the ‘pure’ version of super turbo. But I would be slightly disappointed if the game doesn’t run smooth framerate wise. I “assume” the processing power is there in the 360 and PS3. So is the problem in the old code that you are using?
Any comments on beta being on XBL only? Is it because they have a more mature online service/platform?
Thanks for all your hard work and best of luck on the project.
March 15th, 2008 at 1:01 am
I can’t answer these questions here, sorry. But Mike: the game runs at 60fps always. I’m not aware of any framerate problems at all.
March 15th, 2008 at 1:44 am
Most of the information is already out there anyway… you guys could try reading the articles he linked *before* you ask questions:
Jorge: Yes, I believe the release date has been announced, and it’s during the coming spring… I’m too lazy to go track down where I saw the date right now.
Robyrt: Capcom’s blog indicates 8-man will be a lobby system, two players compete, the other six watch, and then the loser steps down and one of the other player’s takes his place, simulating an arcade, essentially.
Everyone talking about PC/Wii/whatever: To my knowledge the game is confirmed for PSN/XBL right now, but that does not mean it’s been denied on any other system. If you really want to see a PC release, go tell Capcom. Sirlin might be nice enough to point out the comments you make here to people he works with, but that still doesn’t make this the appropriate place to come if you want to get your voice heard on an issue like that.
March 15th, 2008 at 2:08 am
x1372, I doubt this will be releasable on the Wii due to the Wii not running in HD. While a port would be possible (downsampling and all that), it’d liking be a bit of a pain and considering space requirements and the lack of a lot of unique downloadable content on the wii, I just don’t see that happening.
Shingouki: Personally I like the new sprites much better. Less is more sometimes and I felt the original shading was a bit too much and made eveyone look crazy roided up and just looked really busy. I still loved the hell out of them, but I’m more partial to these.
Opinions aside though, as Capcom said, it was to make it easier for the inbetween frames to be outsourced. The sprites seem to be the same size, so theres no reason to think they were downsampled… and considering all the art issues we’ve known to exist, I really doubt this is just an excuse. I do hope they fix up some of the stuff like the idle animation. Everything else looks fine though, considering they can’t add frames.
March 15th, 2008 at 2:23 am
UC1, that’s a great comparison. The idle animations are clearly off.
Important note! The contrast and brightness of the gametrailers.com video is way off! Their videos are way too bright, which makes the sprites look flatter and more washed out than they actually are. The IGN and gamevideos.com videos are much more representative of what the game actually looks like.
March 15th, 2008 at 3:09 am
In one of the interviews you said how you were basically leaving chun-li unchanged except for removing df-forward and changing spinning bird kick. Does that mean she has retained her stored super? Does this apply to Honda’s ochio as well?
March 15th, 2008 at 3:14 am
That’s fine and thank you Sirlin for the reply. The game running at 60fps is great news and is the only issue I REALLY care about. I cannot wait until the release.
Best of luck,
Mike

Nice interview on Gamevideos. Lots of details and honest tradeoff choices you guys made for trying to keep to the original content and adding new REMIXes. I’m actually more excited about this game than SF4. Reason being that SF4 looks like SF2 with a face lift. Sad considering SF4 was suppose to be the heir apparent. Hopefully the balancing act will bring the remix to the point of people losing because of their skills and not character selection. SF3 Third strike to me has always been the most balanced fighting game but that could just be me.
Good job overall and can’t wait to see more on this game.

“a way to view the hitboxes”
“a way to view the hitboxes”
“a way to view the hitboxes”
!WELL DONE SIRLIN!
March 15th, 2008 at 4:09 am
I was just wondering. Are you guys going to update the voices? I mean the nasal congestion announcer and the semi-”weak” voice of guile has to get updated. Please tell me you will fix this issue. Other than that I see no issues, other than the standing animation of Ken/Ryu seem a bit off.

March 15th, 2008 at 5:38 am
So match spectating will be in the game for the 8-player tournaments? Will any other spectator possibilities exist?
March 15th, 2008 at 6:12 am
I would say, unlikely, forty. The more spectators you get, the more lag, since it means all the packets being sent between the two actual players have to be doubled and sent to each spectator as well. I’m actually a bit disappointed to hear they’re doing a lobby, since lack of lobby in VF is usually claimed as the main reason the game is actually playable online, unlike, for example, DOA.
March 15th, 2008 at 7:13 am
Nice work UC1.
It looks like the animation cycle in the new standing animation is messed up, the original is a straight up and down while the new one has a hitch in it. (Looks like frames are out of order, maybe that’s a problem with your gif though?) Also the old animation has essentially no horizontal motion at all, while the new one does.
March 15th, 2008 at 7:22 am
I noticed a similar type of hitch in the backpedal animation, and Ryu’s crossing-arms win pose looks kind of weird (his ghi looks like its having a seizure instead of flapping in the breeze).
Overall, I’m absolutely loving the HD Remix art style. I think the new 4-tone style fits SF more than the old, busy 8-tone style. In fact, the HD art fits SF even more than the smoothly animated 3D-ness of SF4. HD Remix’s art accentuates the game’s comic-book-ish style, whereas SF4’s 3D models/animations seem generic and bland now.
Sigh, if only this was coming out on PC…
March 15th, 2008 at 7:29 am
James M: I agree, looks like the animation frames are completely out of order. Look at ryu’s right leg (left side for us), in the old version, he’s clearly pivoting on the ball of his foot, and his knee slides back and forth a bit, so there is some horizontal motion there. In the new version, his foot’s going crazy, and the knee does a quick in-out-in-out within a single loop.
March 15th, 2008 at 7:33 am
edit: Actually, the background looks out of order too… the girl directly behind ryu seems to be going right arm down directly to right arm up, and then there are two frames with her right arm in the middle… looks like her arm should probably be doing a smooth transition from up > middle > down > middle. UC1, are you sure you didn’t get the order of the pictures wrong?
March 15th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Game videos can’t seem to spell your name right, Sirlin :( Good thing he spelled out the address of this site right.
March 16th, 2008 at 12:52 am
“UC1, are you sure you didn’t get the order of the pictures wrong?”
I’m pretty sure it was just skipping frames in that particular video. Now that I’ve seen a few more videos, it looks like they do accurately match up. Just to be safe I made one more gif…
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v507/ultracrazy1/SD-and-HD.gif
Haha what a great way to kill time while waiting for ST to arrive >_>
btw good stuff Sirlin, this game looks brilliant! :]
March 16th, 2008 at 1:46 am
Show me a review site that focuses on the rebalancing in their previews of this game, instead of the fancy new art, and I’ll eat my hat. Or at least nibble on it, I rather like my hat, actually.
March 16th, 2008 at 3:02 am
On top of spelling his name wrong, all these videos seem like they almost try on purpose to show the wrong footage at random. Like, Sirlin will be talking about how O. Sagat’s fireballs are so good and they’ll show N. Sagat fumbling around. It’s actually kinda funny, because I’m sure the only people that would notice this are the people who would just laugh about it.
Also, almost all of the SF4 videos and now most of the SF:HD videos show game-play footage of people that seem to have no idea how to play the game. I’d like to think that some of those kids on SRK who thought making the SPD motion slightly easier will turn things into a scrub-fest will realize that most mere mortals still fumble about with QCF+P. But I doubt it.
On a side note, Sirlin, do you think there’s any chance that you’d be able to record a set of matches the next time you get Seth or any of the other guys up there together to play-test this? I’m sure a bunch of us nerds would love to see some footage of what good game-play looks like in HD ;)
March 17th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Holy crap, UC1! Definitely WIN on that comparison GIF! Truth be told, when I played this, I noticed the IDLE animation looked a little goofy, but it was a minor annoyance compared to how awesome this game looks/plays.
Now that I can see it over and over, it looks like the sprite offset is off on one of the frames. I went ahead and moved the frame to a spot that looks pretty decent. Please pardon the quality; stupid Photoshop couldn’t read the animated frames in your gif, so I had to use some goofy(and glitchy) animated gif program to do it. You can see the difference quite nicely, actually:
http://www.planetskill.com/images/sdhd.gif
Now, if it were easy to make the shotos not look like they were looking at the ground all the time… =X
I wish they were recording when I was playing. Nobody could touch the Ken, except Sirlin, of course.
