Sirlin Playing SF HD Remix Beta

Here's a video that Cigarbob recorded of some casual play in the Street Fighter HD Remix beta. You can see me play starting at 3:15. I play Ryu here and demonstrate the use of the fake fireball several times (it has other uses too, but this is just a sample).

I forgo several crossup oppertunities in this vid, partly because we were distracted with talking partly because CigarBob has crazy reversal abilities. In later matches I went for the crossups more, but whatever. At some point I did a crazy dragon punch vs his sweep and declared the maneuver "old-school only."
Enjoy.

That is most definitely not an XBox 360 Controller you’re playing with!

  2. Robert August de Meijer Says:

Bob is clearly playing stick; Sirlin’s execution seems to be pretty good, I wonder if he’s using the Xbox 360 pad or a Dead or Alive stick or a custom stick.

    Nice sweep-countering dragon punch, indeed!

I’d love to play Bob, Jesse, Sirlin, etc., too, but since I live so far away, I’d feel guilty for giving the guys lag matches.

4. Moran Says:

    Good show Sirlin, and CigarBob!

What was that one bug you guys were talking about earlier?

  5. ratman Says:

Good stuff, Sirlin. I’m enjoying the beta very much, can’t wait for the full release.

My only real wish is that ranked matches were more than just one match at time; make them a best of X set (first to 2, 3 or 5 wins, something locked and constant across all ranked games. letting loser repick after each match). Obviously player match is what you want to do when you want to play the same person over and over again, but ranked matches offer the thrill of climbing a ladder and seeing improvements in your rating, plus generally have the larger player pool from my experience in other games.

Having ranked matches be best of X sets A) decreases overall downtime between games (don’t need to search for new player, ready, pick char, load new level, play game, see end stat screen, repeat, etc) and B) lets players get a better feel for each other; one game is just too little time to really get inside your opponents head.

Just my 2c, otherwise love the beta so far!

  6. PoisonDagger Says:

    The beta sucks.

There’s no PC version, that’s why. lol

  7. Kurt W. Horsting Says:

the fun thing about the fake hadouken is that you can cancel a low poke into it, giving you better recovery then normal. so you can do low roundhouse to fake fireball, to low roundhouse over and over, and put a lot of pressure on you opponent. you can also do a dragon punch after instead if you think he will try to counter, or walk up throw. Its uses may go beyond just tricking the opponent. Oh, and ken’s strong dp is broken in the beta.

  8. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Yeah! Great Show

Sirlin and Bob kicking arse. Its fun to see different style of play and the use of the fake fireball Damn. Good times…. Street fighter and VF is all Bob plays right on. Hope to see you guys at EVO 2008.

  9. Sirlin Says:

I’m #4 on the leaderboards right now with only 1 loss, heh.

  10. CigarBoB Says:

Well im #1 on the leader board!! LOL

No I am not playing on a xbox pad. I built my own arcade cabinet that the TV sits on. It is very similar to the Jap arcade cabs except kinda ghetto and tough as hell.

Thanks again sirlin, I always have fun in our match’s but i have to figure out why we get lag.

  11. Bruce Achterberg Says:

After watching these videos, my GPPO ST Ken game magically improved.

Clearly there are nice passive skill-increasing effects designed into HD Remix. Or perhaps CigarBob and Sirlin are just giving off 1337ness.

    ;)

  12. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Still Fun to watch.
My friends scrambled home and got online to find you guys. Watching you guys play makes me feel like I am standing next to the SF machine again waiting to get my arse kicked. Sirlin you didn’t answer home slice are you on an arcade stick? Bob you slap the piss out of those buttons sounds just like Bilky playing Smack, Smack, giggle SMACK. Bob are you going to EVO 08? I think asking Sirlin is kinda pointless, I know he will be there. Ok back to the grind.

  13. waterd103 Says:

Keep you stupid beta for your Xbox. We, Pc users, don’t want to be tortured in public thanks, so don’t bring it to a pc media you XXXX. I have WOW here psss.

  14. A_Rival Says:

    Huh?

  15. elektrotal Says:

what’s the recommended way to play? surely not the xbox pad…

  16. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Wow what?

Ok I didn’t understand any of that. Yes I think stick is the way to go I need to look into it soon, however I have heard a rumor that there is a SWEET STICK coming out made by big C. Any way had a couple lock ups today and had a 6 hour long arse whooping. Its pretty cool to play a beta of a game and meet a grip of nice people. Not once did I have anyone talking trash or crying about lag. I played a gentleman by the name of (LIGHTS OUT)40 plus times and lost all but four times. Also played a kid that never had a mic tell the end when he had to go,by the name of (R3th) lost to him 62 times and won twice. What the heck is my point you ask….well I never had a better time losing in my life on this game.
I remember some of these players from hyper fighting and had good talks as well as screaming are guts out at close matches. This is such a great Beta I don’t care who says what about the game I am loving every tiny sprite every sweet combo. Lose or win this game is the GREASE MASTER. Trying to play CigarBob and Sirlin it would be a dream come true. See you all on the stomping ground.

  17. Claytus Says:

Since it’s generated several questions… here’s a translation of what waterd said: “I wish this was available on PC, not just xbox”

  18. Kick Says:

Looks good, dude. Can’t wait to play.

‘Round 1′ -> ‘Fight!’ still seems weak to me. I think the ‘FIGHT!’ part should flash/explode onto screen, not slowly grow.

  19. CigarBoB Says:

Greedy McNasty Feel free to send me a friend request on XBL. My GT is CigarBoB HD. Pleae send me a msg on ther so i know its you. I get to many random FR’s that just deny.

  20. CoamIthra Says:

It looks like the cheesy “round.. one.. FIGHT!” announcement is an homage to the original SF2 game.

That or the 150 meg limit really got to them :)

  21. vr00m Says:

The 150 meg limit does not apply to hdremix, sir.

  22. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Right on Bob
I have played alot of people that you have clobbered. Looking forward to losing to you as well. You remind me of a player from MI. Midwest street fighter players fight to the burger. Nice arcade cab 4 years that thing has lasted a while. Oh and I see you have been going to EVO for at least 4 years. I need to research before I open my big mouth. Thanks for the responce see you online during the week. I Grind it out work style on the weekends. Gotta pay the bills somehow. Later Days

  23. Phil Caselli (PoMbO) Says:

Wow, Am I wrong or I saw Ken doing 2 DPs at a juggle???

Anyways, nice fireball trick, Sirlin. Deserves the fame that you have, hope I find you for a match (i’m sure I’ll learn a lot of things).

I brought KOF’96 Ultimate Match lately, the gameplay was tuned just like I see in ST Remix: some new moves and the same “old-school” spirit.

In my country, we called this feeling “saudade” lol

P.S.: Regards for “Playing to Win” stuff. My playing skills changed after reading these articles, I’m feeling - and playing - a lot better than before. And enjoying it! \o/

  24. spudlyff8fan Says:

I’m still pretty sore from the shellacking you gave me, Sirlin.

  25. Skillz0rz Says:

I was watching the video on the page…then looked a little closer and was like “hey that’s me on there” lol. Nice matches with you and Sirlin last night. Good stuff. Need to bite the bullet and order a stick from play-asia soon, playing on with d-pad is aweful.

  26. MogKnight Says:

    So… what was Bob talking about with the racist thing? <.<;

  27. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Lucky Dog

Played last night and was thinking the same thing. Need a stick bad, Don’t like to choose what buttons I am going to NOT play with. Keep reaching for a button that is not there. Still having a blast. Also the rumors that are flying all over the beta are great. Time to put in so work.

  28. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Double your clown shoe fun

Well for the first time in a week of playing it happened. I had my first group of clown shoes come into the room hooting and dollar billing. The came in the room and just started saying every racist comment a Clown Shoe could think of. Way to clear a room! However I am still having a blast with the Beta. Played some ranked matches and a lot of them did not show up on the leader board. Ranked matches I found are SUPER lagtastic. Back to the grid for me.

  29. hamster78 Says:

Hey CigarBob, was the setup at Evo2k7 that had Alpha 3 going your setup? That thing was friggin awesome.

Anyways a shot in the dark here but does anyone remember the stick back from Evo 2k4 that Watts was playing on in pool play? After he finished his match with me in pools, he let me use it for all the rest of the people in the pools and the thing was awesome.

The stick is shapped like a capital letter I and can be broken down into 3 parts: A base, a stem, and the control panel. The base allowed you to put your feet on it to rest and also provide sturdiness to the stick. The stem was the perfect height so that you could sit down and play from any regular chair. The control panel was just a custom stick sitting on the stem.

It looked like the 3 parts were disconnectable for easy transport. If anyone remembers this stick and the guy that designed it, mind letting me know? I’m interested in commissioning who ever made that stick to make me one or at least let me know how it was made.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how the stem on the thing is so sturdy as to not make the whole thing wobble.

  30. omfglearntoplay Says:

Wow, I hate Ryu’s fake fireball a lot already. :(

  31. PoisonDagger Says:

It’s funny how Ryu’s fireballs are so much more powerful than anyone else’s in the game now, and it’s only because he can throw a fireball that’s not really a fireball. :P

  32. nighthawk9 Says:

I still am kind of curious on why this demo was not made available to Playstation users.

In any case, it was good to see some top quality play from the beta as well as the newly developed Ken.

His new Strong DP has players a might conserned of his power level now. It has tramendous damage potential and stun. It could easily be more effective than his super itself.

And you thought Fie Longs Flying Kick to combo was bad. Will you be making any tweeks to Ken in light of this?

  33. nighthawk9 Says:

    Oh bloody hell it was in the begging of the video…my error >.<;

  34. PoisonDagger Says:

This wasn’t made available to PS users because that would have taken more time and money, and the game is already over its initial budget thanks to some unforeseen difficulties. The 360 beta will still benefit the PS version in the end, though, so it’s not all bad.

  35. Heldarion Says:

why can’t I hear any of the Sirlin’s comment in the video? :o

  36. PoisonDagger Says:

Because they were playing over the Internet.

  37. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Damn it man.

I got to play CigarBob last night and to say it in a good way. I was DESTROYED!!! Just because you can beat your friends does not mean you can beat top level players. All you can do is learn and listen. Bob I will be your punching bag anytime. I turned 34 today and for my b-day I got an hour long spanking. I still had a great time and am wishing for a 6 button controller. Need to go grab me one of those kinds soon. OK back to the grind. Thanks Again CigarBob.

  38. nighthawk9 Says:

I am really looking forward to this none the less. I however wonder if there might be other things “broken” with other characters. I think a closed beta will happen with the entire roster available so they can find those little things. However, if that happens I am not sure when the game will be released.

It may even be shooting for a short time before Street Fighter IV. Which I am also looking forward to. If I can find a bloody arcade stick.

  39. Greedy McNasty Says:

    nighthawk9

Hey partner if your looking for a kick arse arcade stick you can go a few routes. You can buy an arcade stick and buttons then a wired 360 controller and take it apart and a few wires here and there and you could have a shoe box arcade stick if so desired. Or you can have others do the work for you. A sweet place called ARCADEINABOX.COM. There controllers are straight pimped. That is what I am looking into as soon as I get some extra loot.

  40. Bruce Achterberg Says:

    Nighthawk9,

Other Xbox360 arcade stick options include the Hori EX2 stick (also known as the “Hori Fighting stick 3″, I think) and the upcoming Hori Real Arcade Pro EX.

If I’m correct, the Hori EX2 uses all Hori parts and costs about $80 USD.

The HRAP EX uses a Sanwa stick and Hori buttons and costs about $200 USD.

I believe the HRAP EX has better construction than the EX2, and apparently Sanwa (and Seimitsu) parts are better than Hori parts.

Apparently people prefer the “clicky” Sanwa and Seimitsu buttons to the “mushy” Hori buttons, saying that they are “better.” I suspect they mean the Sanwa and Seimitsu buttons are better for performance (perhaps they have a shorter travel distance?) and it’s not just a preference thing (but perhaps even that is subject to preference; not sure).

Not sure if the buttons are convex or concave, but I believe both sticks have a square gate and the “lollipop” joystick.

The EX2 works with a PC, but for it to work as it would on an Xbox360 (i.e. you can press 3 buttons at once and have it register, etc) I think you have to make a few driver changes. As far as I know, as of this writing it’s unconfirmed if the HRAP EX works with the PC.

I’m looking for a stick myself and am leaning towards an EX2, or perhaps a stick from www.ArcadeInABox.com if I find the increase in quality justifies paying a bit extra, or if I find I prefer the construction size and layout more than the EX2. Taking shipping into account in addition to the overall price of the stick is a factor, too, but I’d opt for the value/price breakpoint (for better performance) regardless of shipping costs.

Sirlin has an older equivalent of the EX2 which he talked about here:
    http://www.sirlin.net/?p=96

(It may even be the same as the EX2, just with different cover art, but I’m not sure.)

I believe he uses the DOA (EX2) stick for the 360, but he has mentioned in this thread:
    http://www.sirlin.net/archive/my-street-fighter-match-videos-from-evolution-west-2007/#comment-64249
… that he was using a HRAP 2 for SSF2T from Capcom Classics Collection 2 (which he said here: http://www.sirlin.net/?p=193) which was available on PS2 and Xbox (which he said here: http://www.sirlin.net/?p=193). I’m not sure if Sirlin uses a different stick to the DOA (EX2) stick for competition, or if he just uses the HRAP 2 for compatability with the PS2 or Xbox (not sure if they were running SSF2T on a PS2 or Xbox).

I suspect the difference between an ArcadeInABox.com stick and an EX2 will be marginal, but those familiar with higher quality sticks may not want to downgrade to lower quality after using a Hori RAP or a custom built stick.

I’ve never owned or used an arcade stick (although I’ve used arcade machines), so all this info is just good reporting. The info should be accurate, but I can’t say for sure.

    — Bruce

  41. Sirlin Says:

I used to use American sticks, but I switched to Japanese-style (for the uninitiated, they are very different). I used the PS2 soul calibur stick for a long time in casual play. It’s similar to the DOA on Xbox 360, also by Hori. That’s what I use in HD Remix right now because it’s the main stick available for that system. It’s fine. The VF5 stick on 360 is literally identical except for the stickers, by the way.

For competitions the last few years, I have used the HRAP 2. (Not the HRAP 1, I hate that thing.) I like the HRAP 2 and I think it’s a bit better than the Hori DOA stick (because of the Sanwa joystick and heavier base), but whatever. I see that an HRAP is coming out soon for 360 so maybe I’ll get that if I remember to actually order it.

  42. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Thank you Bruce
    Thank you Sirlin

All this info at one time it’s like an overload of goodness. Quick question for David or Bruce. What about 6 button controllers? Like the ascii controllers anyone use those? I know it sounds nutty but I would rather use my old ascii or saturn controllers. I have come across a converter that says it will convert all old ps and ps2 controllers for use on the 360. It’s called the XFPS 360 V3 Sniper, Now I know that it is made for keyboard and mouse FPS games, but it also has a port in the front. Does anyone know if it works for SF games or is there a slight delay issue? I have gone down that road and it was not worth it. Do not try the ps3 to ps2 converter it has major delay problems and makes playing a hair rip montage of pain.
Oh and props to my friend KING KOAL your arcade stick works like magic. I took a Major beating from him today. Good times, I can see my win to loss record right now 12 wins 8764 losses. Ranked dead last and loving it. Right now there are three types of players on the beta. Really Good, Really really good, and I have not played this in years….trying to knock off the rust. Thanks again for the info - Later

  43. Claytus Says:

    The main reason people say they prefer sanwa to hori (in my understanding) is just an issue of longevity. Hori parts tend to fail more easily. I myself use the VF5 stick that Sirlin mentioned, and greatly enjoyed it, I would recommend it to anyone. Except that last week (after owning it around 8 months, I think), one of the buttons decided to stop registering about 2 out of 3 times that I pressed it. I’ll probably be getting a new one, since I certainly got some heavy use out of the stick while it did work, but it’s definitely annoying to need a replacement at all. Pretty bad timing too, since it pretty much prevented me from trying the HD demo;;

  44. MogKnight Says:

Actually, I would say most people prefer sanwa buttons because they’re a lot more sensitive than hori stock buttons. I own a few Hori sticks myself (T5 for my PS2, VF5 for my 360) and I have a friend who has some customs with Sanwa buttons. You can instantly tell the difference once you get your hands on one of those babies.

I will say though, while I don’t think they made an adapter for the 360 yet, don’t get the X-Arcade sticks. They are complete garbage in that they have input lag. However, if you happen to have bought one, you can easily gut it open, replace it with better buttons and joystick and get the board of a controller and fix it all up. It makes for a great shell, I won’t deny that.

  45. Jake Says:

I too like the Hori EX 2… MUCH better than a controller for fighting games. I used to be a controller-only player and swore I would never switch to the stick.

I did switch to a stick for VF5 and loved it. I could never go back. I have two Horis right now I liked the first one so much. They are also advertising the HRAP for 360 on some japanese sites so that one will be pretty nice, from what I hear.

The Hori EX2 works WAY better than the D-pad for the ST HD Beta. I tried both and preferred the stick by far. It’s just so much better, there’s no comparison.

  46. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Thanks for the info.
I can’t wait to get an arcade stick. I am however going to get some ascii controllers working also. I will give you guys a heads up after I test them both. A huge thank you to (SEGA NINJA) for trying to get me one of those Hori sticks. Don’t worry brother I’ll get one sooner or later. OK gotta Jet on down to the Mandalay Bay to watch RAMPAGE and FORREST rip each others heads off. UFC holds me over till this game comes out. HA! lol……. If anyone want to punish me online drop a friends request to (Greedy McNasty) or (SegaNinja) Later days

  47. Sega Ninja Says:

Thanks for the game time Cigar Bob and Greedy!
I’m loving my Hori EX 2 too, sorry I couldn’t find you one too Greedy. Hopefully it won’t be long till I adjust to playing with it. Still don’t mind getting my bottom end handed to me, so I look forward to playing you all soon.

  48. Nick Byrne Says:

+1 for the Hori EX2- I’m nickfullspec on xboxlive, and I’m waiting for your challange!

  49. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Right On.

Now all we need is to get Sirlin in the mix. Fun times nothing like your wife yelling at you in the background while playing SF and getting worked over to the max. I am still laughing at the old fighting movie quote. NEVER RETREAT, NEVER SURRENDER lol. CigarBob has added to his new combo list, new magic ken beats everyone down combos. You can see fear in the way people play you. At first they are all yeah gonna do this and that …… then FEAR sets in and they go into defence turtle mode. I know I am right there with all of you. Then I find myself asking how in the —- does he do that? The same Question I ask when playing (Jumpsuit). It just goes to show I need a lot of work. Hands down still the best fighting game I have ever played. Oh can we change Ken’s name gRAPE MASTERS minus the G. Also if everyone reading these can head over to BETA.CAPCOM.COM and ask for a booting system to be implemented into player match that would be swell. Nothing more hair ripping than 5 people in a room all kick ass nice, and 1 clown shoe comes into the room and just starts talking POO. Freaking Hulk smash, time to start grinding it out. Later

  50. niofis Says:

I just noticed the smoke left by the hitting hadouken stays static on screen coordinates, it would be ok if there was no scrolling on the background, but I think it should move along with the background depending on the screen scroll.

Nothing that afects gameplay thought, it just didn’t seem right.

  51. Claytus Says:

The smoke is near the characters, and needs to stay in the same place relative to them. The background is very far away, and so the extra scrolling simulates parallax. It would be actually wrong if it worked the way you’re asking.

  52. Forty Says:

Why should something in the foreground scroll with the background? *Boggle*

  53. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Total off point.
Just got finished watching g4 sf4 review. Clown shoes, are you kidding me? What new characters are there? Morgan D-Bag Webb said street fighter 4 the BUTTON MASHER everyone wants to get there hands on. What - you should not always say what you read on the t-prompter. I have been waiting to see an update on hd remix. In the process of mod action for my 6 button controller. It’s a lot harder than it looks. Can’t wait to see the new players. Sirlin if you get a chance hit me up with a friends request on xbox live (greedy mcnasty). I would love to talk to you before EVO. Laters.

  54. Mike Monk Says:

Will the PS3 version of this game have the YouTube upload functionality included?

  55. Greedy McNasty Says:

    Mike
That is a good question, however I have no clue. Sounds like a cool thought. Not like there is many talking about the beta anymore. I went out and got a HORI-SHEET controller not to bad. Huge learning curve on the lolly-pop stick. Then to test it out I went and got SCHOOLED by JUMPSUIT……. Can the kid be anymore good. That make a huge list of straight killers out there. I still think the Beta is great and I am having less lock ups and more fun playing than I was before. You know how you KNOW your getting old? When a 15 year old kid beats you down and tells you that he really is not average but that you just are not that good.. LOL
That was a shot out at you PIRRING you are well on your way buddy. Anyone that plays that well with an xbox analog stick needs some props. Ok see you guys online.

  56. Rick S Says:

You won’t be able to look away now that I pointed this out. But the name of the 2nd player moves when they have voice enabled. I hate that speaker symbol at the top now that my roommate pointed it out.

On the good side I get less lag in this game than any other online fighter. Well no lag with most people I play.
